Topical Skin Adhesive
Histoacryl®
Histoacryl® topical skin adhesive consists of monomeric n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, which polymerizes quickly in connection with tissue or fluid. Histoacryl has many advantages, including easy application, ready-to-use, faster closure times compared to sutures, time and cost savings, less painful than a suture repair and has an effective microbial barrier.
There are three options available when it comes to Histoacryl. The original version of Histoacryl® is available in two colors: translucent (for cosmetic or pediatric applications) and blue, which is great for visualizing on skin that is darker in color and to vizualize the amount being applied.
Histoacryl Flexible is available in blue. Histoacryl Flexible has been designed to combine flexibility, strength, and fast polymerization times, to close lacerations and surgical incisions. When used alone it’s ideal for non-bleeding cuts or wounds that are small or minor, in areas where skin is not being stretched or pulled. It’s also ideal for using on top of stiches/sutures/staples to create a microbial barrier and help keep wound in tack. Histoacryl Flexible is great for locations that need to bend, have movement or flex.

Cost Effective
The Histoacryl® formulation has the activator built in, so there is no initiator required. Histoacryl will not polymerize (dry) until contact is made with skin, fluid or blood. The formulation will not solidify in the applicator, allowing all .5 ml of adhesive to be used.
Precise Application
The flow of Histoacryl adhesive comes with minimal pressure being applied to the applicator. Unlike other topical skin adhesives, there is no need to crack or squeeze rigorously to apply the adhesive to the intended area. Histoacryl Flexible comes with a beveled applicator tip that allows for enhanced control and improved application, for longer, wider incisions.
Microbial Barrier
The Histoacryl formulation is water-resistant and provides an antimicrobial protective barrier over the wound. Using a microbial barrier on top of stitches/sutures/staples will help keep the wound in tack, helping to reduce the risk of surgical site infections.
Clinical Efficacy
